About the School
The development of the discipline of psychology at Fujian Normal University (FJNU) can be traced back to the 1920s, originating from a set of courses on psychology set up by the Department of Family Education at FJNU’s predecessor, Private South China Women’s College of Arts and Sciences, as well as the Department of Education at Xiamen University. Through almost a century’s development, the School of Psychology has become an independent school at FJNU. We started to enroll postgraduate students in 1984 and then undergraduate students in 2000. We were authorized to confer our students the Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology in 1986, and then the Doctoral Degree in Developmental and Educational Psychology in 2006. Moreover, we became an A-level Master’s Degree Granting Institute in the Discipline of Psychology in 2010, and then we were authorized to found the Center for Post-doctoral Studies in Psychology in 2012. In 2018, we further became an A-level Doctoral Degree Granting Institute in the Discipline of Psychology, and we were authorized to confer our students the Master’s Degree in Applied Psychology. The School of Psychology at FJNU is the only educational institute in the discipline of psychology in Fujian Province, for we have a complete system of talent training for students from the undergraduate to the post-doctoral level.
Organizational structure: The School of Psychology is comprised of the Department of Psychology, the Department of Applied Psychology and the Institute of Psychological Studies. The Department of Psychology was founded in 1999, whereas the Department of Applied Psychology was founded in 2017. The School of Psychology is also the institute that the Association of Psychology in Fujian Province is affiliated to.
Faculty members: The School of Psychology currently has 39 teaching and administrative staff, including 25 faculty members. Among our faculty, more than sixty percent are associate professors or professors. The school currently has one winner of the Special Government Allowance, one entitled the Leading Talent in Philosophy and Social Sciences of Fujian Province, two entitled the “Key Talent of Fujian Province”, one entitled the Excellent Youth Workers in Social Sciences of Fujian Province, one entitled the Excellent Teacher of Fujian Province, one entitled the Teaching Masters in High Education of Fujian Province, one entitled the National Excellent Teacher for Master Students of Education, two entitled the Fujian Provincial Outstanding Talent in the New Century, and two entitled the Fujian Provincial Outstanding Youth Talent in Research.
Majors and disciplines: The School of Psychology currently has one A-level Doctoral Program in the Discipline of Psychology, one Center for Post-doctoral Studies in the Discipline of Psychology, one A-level Master Program in the Discipline of Psychology, including three directions: 1) Developmental and Educational Psychology, 2) Fundamental Psychology, and 3) Applied Psychology. We also have one Professional Master’s Program in Mental Health Education. The school has two undergraduate majors: Psychology, which started enrollment of students in 2000; and Applied Psychology, which started enrollment of students in 2017. In addition to undertaking teaching tasks within the School of Psychology, the school also undertakes teaching tasks of psychology courses for students of Master of Education as well as undergraduate students in Teacher Education throughout the university. Moreover, the school has one Provincial Key Discipline of Higher Education, one Provincial Research and Construction Base of Humanities and Social Sciences (Research Center in Developmental and Educational Psychology), two Provincial Top-quality Courses, one Provincial-level Teaching Team, one Provincial Major with Distinguishing Feature, one Provincial Innovative Experimental Zone of Talent Training, and one Provincial Experimental Teacher Development Center.
